String Quartet 2011
The piece is an exploration of two string techniques - pizzicato and artificial harmonics. The piece begins with the jagged sounds of pizzicato before these are eventually tamed by the more ghostly and calmer sounds of artificial harmonics. As the piece contains heavily contrasting colours, it felt necessary to have similar contrasting ideas in the music itself, mainly in the harmony. The piece consist of two harmonic ideas that of a 'serially-inspired' music contrasted with sections that lean towards a more 'tonal' approach in the form of a solo and accompaniment. These contrasting sections are constantly battling for power throughout the piece.
