Five poems by A.A. Milne
for two unaccompanied sopranos (2010)
This song cycle takes it text from a selection of children's poems by the author A.A. Milne. It is an exploration of close harmony and the capabilities of unaccompanied voices in this context. The piece aims to give a sinister edge to these short and humorous, yet ultimately profound, children's poems. The piece also refernces other works such as Bartók's String Quartet No. 5, Debussy's Clair de lune and, with the title especially, Ravel's Trois poèmes de Stéphane Mallarmé.
Premiered by Joy Ludlow and Simi Fyles at the Cardiff University CMG Concert on the 12th April, 2011.
